- The Challenge
Guwahati, premier city of North–East India, is a fast growing city with a big problem: a growing crowd of vulnerable children. These children are denied their childhood, education, nutrition, and health. Some are even engaged as child laborers. They are denied of all their rights.
- The proactive response
Though efforts are being made by some agencies (Snehalaya, etc.) to rehabilitate them, more must be done. Spurred by this challenge, Don Bosco Society has committed to protecting the children of Kamrup (Metro) District. The young at risk are those who have not been enrolled in school, child laborers, and rag-pickers.
- The vision and objectives of the initiative
The vision of the initiative is to make Guwahati child-friendly. This implies the realization of all the rights by all the children. The end-result of this project is 100% enrollment in schools and 100% retention.
- The way forward
Through advocacy, CFG will hold the government responsible as the first duty-bearer. It will enlist the support of the media, the NGOs, child rights activists, and spirited individuals. Some outstanding people from the Police, Labor, Health, Education and Social Welfare Departments of the Government of Assam are involved in this project.
The ultimate aim is to create a CFG village for the youth at risk.
